“Hap” Spuhler Field

In the spring of 1986, the George Mason baseball team ended its odyssey of playing on temporary and local high school fields when it got its own permanent field west of the Recreation Sports Complex. Named in honor of the program's first head coach, Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field has come to be known as one of the top collegiate baseball complexes in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

In 2002, Spuhler Field was recognized as the Baseball Field of the Year in the College/University Division by the Sports Turf Managers Association. Spuhler Field was recognized for a commitment to excellence in overall field quality, safety, playability and appearance. In 2000-01, the facility was ranked second in the nation in the Beam Clay College Baseball Diamond of the Year Awards after being ranked third in 1999-2000.

To maintain its status as one of the top playing surfaces in the region, Spuhler Field underwent an upgrade during summer 2003 to replace its bluegrass/rye mixture. The new Bermuda turf surface consists of a soil base (90 percent sand/10 percent Swag Peat top soil mix) and a Tufcote Bermuda prescription grass sod. A new drainage system also was installed, along with artificial turf in the home plate area to prevent excessive wear during pre-game preparation.
Spuhler Field boasts permanent grandstand seating for 900 spectators, an enclosed press box with a public address system, and an electronic scoreboard. The field itself also includes an underground sprinkler system, dugouts, enclosed bullpens for both teams, and a batting cage located outside the fence in the left field corner. The dimensions are 320 feet down each line, 375 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to center field.

In addition, the Patriots can utilize a full-sized practice infield adjacent to Spuhler Field. This enables the team to work out in less than perfect conditions without damaging the main field.
Over the past 23 years, head coach Bill Brown's Patriots have posted a 394-186-3 record (.678 winning percentage) at Spuhler Field. The Patriots have won 15 or more home games in a season 19 times and have reached 17 or more wins 13 times. During the 2009 season, the Patriots went 25-3 setting a school record for home wins and home winning percentage. From late in the 2008 season into the 2009 season, the Patriots won a school-record 23 games, the longest streak in the nation at the time.
